Is this a practical idea?

For the island attached to the back of the tank I would find a piece of driftwood and drill holes in the back. I'd use aquarium caulk as a glue to hold suction cups in the holes.
 
The island would probably be better if it had a light-weight frame. I would try plastic sewing mesh (it 50 cents at Michaels in the needlework section), so that the moss would come through the bottom too. And just attach it with suction cups.
 
Does anyone know a good place to buy manzanita wood? (I need to find the perfect piece :D)

Tell me about it!! Did you look at any other pics on the site? It's a good place to get ideas. Some pics have "blueprints" under them that show the names of the plaants and the layout.
