I'd just use a drop checker with a KH reference solution rather than trying to adjust your aquarium water just to get a CO2 reading.

Yup, make or buy a 4dKH reference solution and use that in your drop checker. If you are using 0dKH water in your drop checker, it isn't telling you a thing.
