I recently planted my tank with java fern, corkscrew Val, Anubis, crypts, and some other plant. I am worried about the lighting. It's a 36gal bow front with a plastic hood and 24" life glo 20watt bulb. The guy at the LFS sold me this and said it would be fine for plants. I'm worried its not enough watts per gallon and I am not sure what to replace it with. Do I need to get a new light fixture? Are there better bulbs? Any suggestions would be appreciated I'm not looking to spend a ton of money.

That light will only grow very low light plants. If your a diy type, I'd check out the Bright Kits from A.H. Supply36 or 55 watt Bright Kits. Very inexpensive and easy to do. They will even send you directions on how to retrofit your existing light strip. High quality ballasts and reflectors make these units better than most store bought units.
