Of course now I regret it and can't turn back, as with many things. I did however cut out a piece of the old media and put it in with the new. My nitrites are high right now... All in all i'm wondering did I make a horrible impulse decision? Is my cycle set back now after all this time?

It's hard to say for sure what will happen; if you have nitrites now and didn't before then changing the filter did disturb the bacteria as expected. There's no way of knowing how long it will last though (tank size, fish load, filter size, etc are all factors). There isn't much you can do about it now except test daily and do extra water changes until the nitrites (and ammonia if you get any) go away. Good luck!
