Does anyone have tricks to make "hills" in their tanks without using a lot of rock or sand? Would something like a plastic bowl work burried underneath?

You'd have to make sure it was a plastic that wouldn't leach into the tank.

What about taking styrofoam and utilizing it? That's how many people create DIY caves/rock walls for their tanks.

I didn't even think of Styrofoam! Would it just be the normal blocks you buy?

Great stuff foam works really well for that type of thing too, and might be easier to get it to secure than using styrofoam.

You will want to embed gravel or sand into the great stuff before it dries... it is nearly impossible to get loose substrate to stay on top of any kind of hill in a tank... eventually it all just levels out.
