How would I take cichlids home from markets 30 min+ away without killing them?...

In a bag with water. Fish will be fine in the bag for hours even days if the temperature is maintained.

Yea I buy fish an hour from where I live and they are fine

If you're concerned about temp you can bring, or sometimes Lfs has a styrofoam shipping container.

I sometimes buy fish on a late lunch break and they sit in my office for a few hours always fine when I get home. People ship fish and they spend up to 3 days in a bag. Temperature and oxygen are key.
