I would seriously consider getting some test strips Shannon. They are a good indication to see if your tank is cycled. This is probably part of the reason why he died.
Let it cycle before you go further! toss in a piece of shrimp (or beef, I cycled mine with a small piece of steak) to keep the cycle going.
