Hey guys! I thought I would post a couple pics of my new build. The tank has been setup for a few days now, I have some media and gravel seeding the new filter. I have a few of my fish from my 10 gallon in here to help get this tank cycled. My new equipment is a 29 gallon aqueon tank, fluval 200 watt heater, emperor 280 biowheel. Aqueon single tube t8 8000k light hood. I will post pics soon. My question is I want to do a planted tank but what can I do with this light? I think it is 18 watt. I know that's not good and I can buy a different bulb but what will grow with this fixture.

Thanks, I was hoping that would be the case because I like the oak colored hood. Yeah I like the dw also but it was $16! Any advise for prepping river driftwood and rocks for aquarium use?

If you're a DIY'er there's a place that has kits for hoods like yours. I've done 2 so far and they work great.

Here's a link if you want to check it out.

What  only $16? My LFS would want $30 minimum for one that nice :banghead:.

My advice is be very careful of what wood you use and where you get it from. Hardwood is the only DW I would suggest, since softwood will rot faster. Lots of boiling, soaking, drying out and doing it all over again would be needed IMO. I prefer to get DW from a LFS since all the hard work of disinfecting/curing it has been done for me and all I have to do is soak it to release tannins.

I get rocks from my local landscaping supply yard, wash them in a diluted bleach solution (5%) and soak/rinse/soak in a bucket for a couple weeks and it's worked great for me. Stay away from sandstone, etc because it can raise your pH. To test, take some vinegar with you put a bit on and if it foams/bubbles, don't get it (this test isn't fool proof).

Thanks for the help. I have I think I will stick with lfs rocks and dw. I will update in a few days when I get some.

It has taken me awhile to get back to the aquarium thing I have been busy with other things, but here are some new pics of my aquarium. I have had some new species in the tank (ghost shrimp, dwarf frog, and others) but I recently bought some tiger barbs who have been on a murdering spree since they have been home and have killed 3-4 fish and are now nipping at my mystery snail. They are going back to the lfs today before my tank is toast. Any ideas on species that will get along with my fish?

how many frogs do you have? they do best in groups of 3 or more. what are you feeding them? no freeze dried food, only live, frozen, and HBH frog and tadpole bites

1 Clown Pleco
1 Mystery Snail
3 Tiger Barbs
2 Mystery Fish (I will look at LFS today i forget what they are called)

it sucks that the frog died:(
the glofish are genetically modified zebra danios,so do best in groups of 6 or more(and wil school with normal zebra danios). the corys are also schooling fish, and the bare minimum for them is 4,6 being best. if you want to post pics of the mystery fish we can try to ID it(this is mainly an excuse for more pics:lol:)

OK so I forgot about the pics.. I was busy bailing water out of my jeep.. I had the top off and it started pouring... Oh well. Any ideas on a good center piece fish? I figure I will take my tiger barbs back and just do a large school of neons/cardinals and then add a couple more danios and corys.

They look more like red serpae tetras. The harlequins dot have fins that long.

yea those were serpae tetras, the new tiger barbs made quick work of them.. :nono: I haven't posted pics of the mystery fish yet but i will when i get home. The pics i posted yesterday are about 2 months old. I will take some new ones and post em up after work. Then its off to the LFS to take the tiger barbs back and get something else.

I really would like some ideas on what kind of CENTER PIECE FISH to get when I am there. I don't really want something that is going to attack everything in the tank but I also don't want a Betta.

Here are some pics of the mystery fish. Let me know what they are if you know.

Here are some updated pics of the tank. I managed to get a pic of the pleco which was difficult..

Traded the Tiger barbs in for 3 neons and 3 zebra danios.
