Just started setting this up, trying to find a good used canister filter for it, thinking about putting in dwarf cichlids since it's a 35g. tank, with water quality from here I'll do Africans, plus they are the mist colorful.

You don't need a cannister filter to keep cichlids. An HOB or even a large sponge filter would work.There are a number of West African cichlids that would do well in that size tank, including kribensis. A few of the smaller Tangs such as Julidichromis species also.
