I don't have a planted tank...yet. But I am in the planning stage of my 55 gal tank and am going to plant it and use sand and I was told in the Planted Forum that plants will grow with pool filter sand.
Update:
Currently my ammonia reads at 4ppm, and Nitrites are at 0.50ppm. So i guess the cycle has begun. The tank looks a bit cloudy, so I am guessing it is the bacterial bloom.
Only problem so far is the smell. Oh god it's awful. lol
