I wonder if your barbel issue has anything to do with the size your substrate? Is it larger rocks? If it was because of dirty substrate you should be able to do extra gravel vacs to accomodate your cories...

My substrate I don't think is the problem. It's really fine gravel, about the size of very large grains of salt that you might find on pretzels. It's smooth edge too. I do gravel vacs twice a week along with the water changes, so the only other thing left is overstocking, I guess. We'll see, as my new main tank is 2x the size of the one it is replacing.
