I posted a few pictures (5 if I remember correctly) last night but they say they are awaiting approval. This did not happen the other time that I posted pictures of my tanks. Is this normal?

If you post pictures to your gallery, they must await approval. I just took care of yours 
This is not so much to check for inappropriate pics as it is to insure that the pictures are placed in the correct category.
Pictures posted in a forum thread do not sit in an approval queue.
