I recently bought plants and added tetra safestart bacteria and started the fishless cycling with ammonia. i just read though that the bacteria and plants might compete for the ammonia and the plants will absorb it quicker, and that I should not start the fishless cycling with plants.

Is fishless cycling somehow harmful to plants?
Can I just add the fish in and will the plants take up the fish ammonia?
Also, why is the ammonia level still so high up with the plants?

Plants will not be harmed by high ammonia unless it's exceptionally high. Don't add the fish as they will get killed by the ammonia. If it's more than 1 than that can harm the fish. So don't add the fish unless it's below that number.

Plants will take up ammonia but you need a lot and fully growing. I suspect your newly planted tank is fairly sparse and would have very little effect on ammonia levels.

As other said your plants should be fine as long as your ammonia levels aren't off the chart.
