I have a 7 gallon tank with a male betta and a mystery snail. Right now we have just a bunch of plastic plants, but I'm worried that my new betta is going to rip his lovely fins on them. Any suggestions on which type of plants are best for a small tank?

It depends greatly on the type of lighting you have, and whether or not you plan to inject CO2 and dose multiple varieties of fertilizer.

What type of light do you have? Do you have any little pieces of DW? Java fern, anubia, and java moss are easy to grow in low light. Also what type of substrate do you have?

It's pretty well lit, I'm not sure what the wattage is, but it is a compact fluorescent bulb. The tank is sitting on the counter between the kitchen and dining room, both of which have windows, so it gets some natural light as well. No driftwood, just a couple of ceramic decorations, 6 plastic plants, and a little cave. Substrate is just your run of the mill aquarium gravel. I prefer sand, but this filter is too close to the bottom and the sand would just ruin it.

I'm not sure exactly what bulb it is. It looks like this though. We've had the tank forever, and never had to replace it.
