Platy swimming frantically. Please help

Basically our platy is swimming normal 1 minute and then swimming crazy like hitting the sides of the tank then the stones on the bottom, like he's throwing himself around the tank then he's swimming on his side for ages then he will rest on the stones and hide. We've just watched him barrell rolling around the tank and hitting the sides. It's like he can't control it. Then swim normal and start all over again. What is wrong with him?
