Prison theme tank

Y mom has gotten interested in fish & she is having me set up a 40 or 55 g tank. She is wanting nw cichlids that have mean names (ex. Black convict, red devil...) I know nothing about cichlids but I really want to do this for her. So what do I need for filtration, stock, hiding spots, etc.

I would suggest you perhaps look in the Cichlid forum on this site. You will probably have better luck there with stocking and compatibility.

For your set up I would recommend sand substrate and avoid plants. Cichlids generally don't do well with plants as they like to dig. Rock formations are great. For filtration I would suggest something about 300 or more GPH for 40 gallons. More is always better IMO.

There are tons of members tank pics in the Show off/photography forum and the members fresh water tanks. You could probably get some great ideas there for how to set it up.
