Question about "Marimo Moss Ball"

I've bought this moss ball for a week. I put it in a small bottle which its neck is quite narrow.

I use a cotton brush to pull it out of the bottle. That's the problem. Now there are cotton stick all over my moss ball.

So my question is:

Will it die if my fingernails or anything else accidentally tear some of its skin out?
(like I use my fingernail to pinch those cotton and accidentally pull out some of its skin) or are there any other way to clean this thing?

It won't hurt it, I had one that was too big and just ripped it right down the middle to make 2 smaller ones, both survived and after a while both were nice and round

It's a ball of algae! Grab the thing and swish it around with your hand in some clean water.
