Question reguarding cycling new tank

Hello everyone. I am a newbie to the site,and a novice in SW tank...I read many posts on how to cycle a new tank. One post mentioned
using cocktail shrimp to speed up the process.... Is this live or dead shrimp? Could someone please tell me. Thanks!

By coctail shrimp they are referring to uncooked shrimp that you purchase at your local grocery store in the seafood section.

That's a "fishless cycle" you are talking about--it doesn't necessarily speed up the process, though, AFAIK.
