 OK So here's the deal, when I first set up my tank I went with a cheap quartz substrate. It was cheap and within my budget at the time.

My tank is very well established and I've been thinking about switching substrates. I was thinking of going with sand or a finer gravel grade. My question is how would I go about doing this?

I wouldnt want to completely remove all the gravel because that would upset the bacterial balance and be very laborious. But maybe remove a layer and add the new substrate on top?

Does anyone have any experience or helpful advice?

Go ahead and remove the old substrate and replace with whatever new substrate you would like. Never mix 2 substrates bc you can never unmix them/ it will be very hard and annoying to separate. You just need to make sure over the next few weeks you watch your levels closely and do frequent water changes and you will be good to go.
