I'm new to RESs myself so I'm interested in all turtle talk! 
Is he wild caught? Maybe live food if he is big enough, meal worms, small crickets, earthworms. Pellet should be a staple but I've read at a young age they prefer meat to plant.
I have frogbit and wisteria floating in my tank he hasn't touched it but he's always chasing tadpoles and plecos.

Even though they are native species where I live (S.E. Texas), it was store bought. My girlfriend really wanted one. I am out of league when it comes to turtles. I was perfectly happy with just fish...lol. I may try some live food and see it he eats that.
