So I was talking with a buddy last night about how I want to switch to sand. He advised with HOB filters it's not a good idea? I don't remember the exact reason he said it was a bad idea, so I figured y'all might be able to inform me a little better.

Thanks,
Andrew.

The reason it being a bad idea is that most filter intakes go to the bottom of the tank where the sand is, so they suck up sand and can in turn clog up the propellor and filter intake. I avoided this problem because some filters, like Aquaclear, come with two intake tubes, and you can take one off so it can be higher off the substrate.

i just switched to sand and have a HOB filter...so far nothing bad....

I'd go to your LFS, while a bit more expensive, they are going to give you EXACTLY what you need for your tank. Oh, and they do have black sand that is perfect for tanks.
