What's the purpose of a protein skimmer on SW I have freshwater tanks but want some SW and would like to kn ow what extras I will need that I normally wouldn't have to have for FW

A protein skimmer basically removes organic matter from your system before it can break down into nitrogenous waste. It assists the BB in your live rock/sand by preventing more waste to filter.
