I've just started cycling this 48gal
21D x 18W x 36L tank.
I'm looking for opinions on what would be the best options?A community would be cool, it's for a 7yr old.
I've got the Wet spot fish store close by too.
The aquascape will be foraged up soon.
Does anyone know what type of wood this is that I got at a wedding reception? I'd like to use a few small pieces off it.

I buy almost all my fish online from Wet Spot, I'm jealous!

With that size tank I'd go with one or two large groups of schoolers, a good-sized group of loaches or cories, and a centerpiece fish (single/duo/trio depending on what you choose). Do you have any fish in mind at all?

I've used Manzanita in my tanks for years. I bought some earlier this year from a wedding/party decoration site and it's deteriorated quickly. It's not painted or treated that I know of. Everything else in the tank is fine.

Will you be using live plants?

I'm not sure a flying squirrel would be a good idea inside of an aquarium ;)

I also have manzanita in one of my tanks, it's a pretty common centerpiece for events/weddings.

If you're looking for a community style tank with cichlids, I personally would recommend a couple pairs of cleithracara maronii, a school or two of tetras, and then a shoal of cories or a small group of hoplo cats or porthole cats. Nice simple stocking, very peaceful, and although the keyhole cichlids (maronii) are not very colorful, they have awesome behavior and allow for more colorful dithers (schooling fish used to bring shy fish out of hiding). Hopefully this is a start for ya!

Hmm...
Most fish won't really bring out much color in white sand anyways

Every fish above is over white pool filter sand.

+1

I only have 1 tank with white sand (the others are 'natural' and black) and no issues with color of fish or shrimp!

I thought it was manzanita. It's kind of a suspicious piece. Already brittle and maybe it's been sprayed or treated by a wedding planner with bedazzlment. Not sure that's a word outside of wedding talk. Some live plants definately.

Also, when I say the Wet spot is close, I mean 3hrs away. I travel to Portland from seattle often for work and to visit my old hometown.

If I were a 7 year old I would like: (True facts:This is based on my fish selections as a 9 year old)

Kuhli loaches: Colorful, look like eels, and because there is no actual scientific definition of an eel, you can call them kuhli eels and not be technically wrong.

Marbled Hatchetfish: The flat tops are funny looking and endearing.

Cherry barbs: I picked odessa barbs, but those were psychotic little fin nippers. Cherry barbs are active and colorful like odessa barbs but also very peaceful to other fish.

Upside down catfish: Catfish that swim upside down. Maybe I was just easily entertained, but that's gotta be fun and novel for a kid.

Dwarf neon rainbofish: Super active and shimmery neon color.

I'm digging the color of the roselines in the background.

We are not worrying about white sand ...right??
