i've recently had a number of margarita snails die and on the top of each of their shells are itty bitty spagetti worms. could the worms be killing the snails?

Are you talking about the small white spiral worms on the shell? If so, these are not spaghetti worms but instead are a type of small featherduster worm. Totally harmless. But, even if it is spaghetti worms, it's not likely they killed your snails.

thanks for the info! should i leave the shells in the tank for the worms or get them out?

How many are there? If it's only one or two, in a system that large, I think you'll be ok. If were talking half a dozen or more, I'd remove them. lol
