Staining and sealing light fixture.....Safe?

I have A clear lacquer and Poly urethane which will work best to seal the wood? I am afraid condensation will collect in the fixture and drip bad stuff in the tank.

polyurethane would be my choice. 2-3 coats.

Either should be fine.. I like the look of Poly as well..
