Starting a 55g tank suggestions???

I'm posting this thread to get as many suggestions as possible like what is the must haves for a tank this size and also recommendations wether Sand or gravel and etc...

Freshwater? I'm doing an African cichlid tank... You could do that My sister has an Oscar in a 55 gallon, but he will likely have to be moved to a bigger tank once he gets bigger. a planted with some big schools of tetras and rasboras would look cool too

Oh and I have only ever used gravel, but I am going to use sand in my cichlid tank. I've heard more good then bad about it and most people I've talked to say they prefer sand
