I have four of these guys. The odd thing about them is that sometimes when they eat they seem to gulp their food and swallow air from the surface. Then they swim at an odd angle, heads down, until they burp a bubble. Then they swim normally again. They all do it at one time or another. At first I thought they were ill, but once they burp they swim normally again. I can't find anything written about this strange behavior. Has anyone else seen their Geophagous do this?

What are you feeding them?

Earth eaters typically feed off the bottom of the tank or the lower part of the water column. They will typically sift through the sand at the bottom looking for food.

Also, do you have a picture of them? Geophagus jurapari is a name that importers often throw on earth eaters that turn out to be something else.

Strange Behavior in my Geophagous!

I tried to post a reply but got interrupted by a phone call. Here is a pic of my prized Geophagous! They do sift the gravel but they also eat from the surface. I have some voracious eaters in the tank with them, six black skirt tetras, so maybe they are gulping their food to compete. When I have the money I plan to set up a separate tank and may move the tetras. For now they are in my 55 gallon tank. I feed them flake food, bloodworms, and cichlid pellets.

I would get NLS sinking pellets if that's not what you are feeding now. I don't know for sure but I have read that gulping air isn't good for them.

That is a tough pic and their still small.

Definitely some kind of Satanoperca. Could be jurapari. The one on the right almost looks like S. leucosticta but tough to tell from that.

Okay! I will try the recommended food and see if that helps. Re-posted my last msg with photo.

I would get the thera A with garlic. 1mm pellets since they are so small. Feed the pellets 1 st then some flakes for the skirts and neons . the black skirts will probably grab a pellet but won't be able to eat it until it softens. Nice looking setup.
