I agree, research is key. A 29g will limit you, especially if you are thinking African Cichlids. Stock the 29g accordingly, then add more when you upgrade instead of the other way around.
Do as they said, research research and then research some more. Spend some time reading alot on this site. It will give you do's and dont's about Cichlids and sometimes grey areas where you have to research or go with the most popular.
I hate to say but with the exception of some of the smaller shell dwellers there really isn't any africans you can house in a 29g tank. The minimum I would recommend is a 55g of even better would be a 75g. These fish require swimming room and space to reduce aggression.
