I think its just a piece of driftwood that looks a bit like a tree, and then they attached some kind of moss to it, so that it grows out looking like leaves.

Yep... I saw the build thread on another forum but would have no idea how to track it down. They did what HeathB said. The aquascaper tried many different looks for the tree, that's when it looked most natural IMO.
