thermometers with suction cups

I think it's because overtime the inside of the tank gets a slim coating and causes the suction cups to lose grip. Try putting them closer to the bottom so there's more pressure holding it in place

Certainly older rubber suckers get brittle with age and have small cracks that allows the suction to escape.
Also, glass has to be scrubbed clean in the area that you want a sucker to stick to.

Don't only scrub the glass well, but the sucker part itself. They get slimey too! And yes, they tend to lose suction over time. I have to replace my thermometers about once a year because they no longer stick.
