I know the kind of strong reaction you get with vinegar and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), but do you get a similar strength reaction with bought sand that is aragonite, or just a light fizz? I just bought three different types of play sand trying to find an aragonite sand. None had any kind of strong fizz. I think I heard a faint fizz with one of them, but I suspect it is silicate too.

Sands Tested:
-Wal-Mart Garden Basics Play Sand
-Gulf Coast White Beach Play Sand
-Best Play Sand from Toys-R-Us

If your unsure of whether your sand is aragonite (or calcium based), you can take a small amount of sand and add some vinegart to it, it will bubble and fizz if it is a calcium based sand, it should have little or no effect on silica sand.
