water is CLOUDY!!

For about two years the water in my freshwater fish tank has been perfectly clear until yesterday when it became very cloudy after putting a small plastic plant into the tank.

What was your maintence like previous to this? I have seen this happen in tanks that do not get gravel vac'd often. Putting in the new plant stirs up the substrate, and all kinds of waste that is not full broken down gets spread around, which causes a bacteria/algae outbreak and your water gets cloudy.
