Re did my 55 gallon freshwater tank last week. Went from gravel to sand. I saved my bio wheels and kept them in the original water until the tank was ready. I put my fish back in the new tank after only 7 or 8 hours. I figured they lived in poor water conditions before and this would be a step up. ( lol ). I know it takes a few weeks to cycle the tank but, after a week the fish are doing great. This is the readings from my test kit on water quality.

ph...7.8
ammonia.... .50 ppm
nitrite... 0 ppm
nitrate... 3.0 ppm
The ammonia is a bit high but I see that the nitrates are coming up so thats good...I think
My question is...would using the bio wheels that are already established help my tank cycle faster or am I just lucky. Also, I'm using a freshwater kit from API and it says that the color chart included is appropriate for freshwater tanks that have salt added. I did not add salt. Would this affect the test results?
