weighing down floating plants?

Ive got some crazy growing (what I beleive is duckweed) and floating fern.

I was wondering if anyone has ever weighed down a floating plant to sit on the bottom. I think it would make a great looking bushy plant below but dont know if it can survive below the surface for long? I would use my lead plant weights
