If you're doing 75% changes make sure you're adding your ferts and such for the plants at the same time you do the water change. You're effectively taking away all their food during the water change, so without ferts to compensate they'll struggle. I also recommend canister filters as mentioned by FreshObsessed. Once you've seen the space a canister has for filtration compared to a HOB filter, it's a little startling how much more efficient the cansiter is. If you plan on CO2 for your plants, a canister is better at not gassing out your CO2 as well. I love my Rena Filstar XP3 on my 75 gallon :)

It also might help if you add the betta and the gourami at the same time (assuming you have two floating chambers you can use), as this prevents either from getting a territory established before one or the other comes into the picture.

I'm doing ferts but no CO2.High light.I do have 2 floating chambers and I'll add the betta and gourami last so the other fish are established.

Problem is I don't have tons to spend on this tank and canisters are expensive.

True...
I think I'll go for a canister off craigslist plus a HOB.

I'd do an AC110 and a nice canister if you have that whole stock

That's why I designed my aquascape with lots of plants in thick clumps to break up flow and for fish that don't love high flow to hide in
Plus there's lots of rocks and dw in the scape to break flow
There's also little pockets of space with densely planted walls and open in the middle
The AC 70 and the aqueon 75 are plenty expensive
Maybe I'll upgrade to a canister later on when I have the full stock in
I hope someone on here has a nice canister for sale- if so I'll buy it
I've already offered on a AC 110 someone is selling

Looks like you have been searching around the forum for a canister, nice move:) your fish will appreciate it

Just remember hat GBRs are HIGHLY sensitive to ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels! If you really want them, add them after 6 months to a year, otherwise you'll end up with dead rams! If you really want some cichlid centerpiece, look into keyhole cichlids, not as colorful as GBRs but they're personalities are the best and are often labeled as the most peaceful cichlid known to man :) also look into apistogrammas. Dicrossus are a fun one too haha. In a 90 gallon, you could do at least 4 different pairs of dwarf/small cichlids EASILY!

I'll add the fish in order by number

Dont addthe nerites first, they will need algae and a new tank wont have it

I certainly don't mind ghosts being destroyed! But I'm worried about the fact that the ghost shrimp eat you-know-what and my fish eating them then dying if poisoning
