What is this??????

I'm told it feels like a shark egg... And is attached to the coral by a little white string at the base and is not easy to pull off. It killed the coral.....

Its not in my tank its in a LFS tank in Kingston and they asked me and I have no clue...
 
Ya, could be.. I figure its some type of mollusk, clam, mussel just have no idea what kind. the thing has a strange shape..

Well, I did some digging and I think what they have is a Pteria brunnea (or some other Pteria sp.), or Winged Pearl Oyster. What I've read says they are usually found in clusters on whip coral. I didn't read anything about them being parasitic but it would make sense if it stresses the whip that it would cause recession.
