I just lost a dwarf gourami that started with the same type of thing. After the patch showed up he developed dropsy. Turns out he had some sort of weird internal parasite or something that didn't show up for a year, when he got stressed because of our move. 
If it looks like a hole/chunk missing, and it was my fish, I would get some anti-parasitic medicine and treat ASAP, just to be on the safe side. And I would keep the water SUPER clean.

Looks like the Gouramies are having this kind of issue recently. If I remember correctly, I have seen at least two threads with similar situations like yours.
Don't know why, but follows Darby suggestion. good luck
