Why are my convicts doing this?

Anyone have any thoughts on why my convicts are creating this
wall of gravel in front of the cave they frequent?

That's what cichlids do dig and dig some more. Might be clearing a spot to spawn as well

What are some other signs of spawning I've noticed some different behavior from them lately

That's about all I can think of when mine spawned I didnt know it until I seen babies and the other fish getting beat up by them

Sometimes they will circle and nudge each other along with clearing out a nice even surface to attract the house of spawn lol

Totally normal as both my jd, and rd have done this exact thing, same cave too. And not just for mating as they are both single tank males. Cichlids just love to dig as said before.
