Why did my snail float?

I used to have a snail. I had him for a month until he started floating. he floated for like 2 days. Then he died. Why do snails float?

What kind of snail?

I suspect the snail is already dead (or very sick) when you see the floating. Although Apples can "play" in the water by floating at the surface (it has lungs, so can change buoyancy), they usually don't just stay up top. A constantly floating snail is sick or dying.
