That is one of the most impressive tanks I've ever seen. I love tanks that a part land, part water (I'm planning one right now for a 55 gallon, not so much like a bog, but we seem to have some similar ideas in certain points). It's really interesting to see how it has grown over time, you've really done an excellent job. I am also very interested by carnivorous plants and thought it would be fun to include some, but I would be worried about some of the smaller animals I'd like to keep in the tank with them.

I love the variety of plants and how you've let them grow. It looks very natural and the fish seem to enjoy it. If I had been a member of this forum sooner, I would have been following this thread the whole time because this is such an amazing tank. If we were rating it, I'd give this one a 10/10, it's truly unbelievable and I would love to have one like it.

Very good job.

Thank you yilduz for both taking the time to look and for commenting. I appreciate the very kind words. Be sure and post up your pictures once you get something going, I always enjoying looking at how others do things as well.

Got some updated shots - another one of the flowers is blooming!

This is still my favorite tank in the forum. It seems to look better every time you post about it.

Well, I missed a month there, but guess its time for an update. Thought I took some in March, but now I can't find them anywhere.

Oh well, March is over, so on to April.

A nice FTS, you can the plants are really exploding;

Here you can see a little better how the plants and duckweed have taken over the pool area;

All the plants and roots are making it pretty hard to see any of the life in the pool area, although here you can see one of the snails amongst the roots;

I seem to be getting quite a bit of debris accumulation down in the gravelbed, might have to vaccum it out at some point;

Another of the plants is blooming again, so all that natural fertilizer is obviously good for something;

The Bog Orchid appears to be sending up a new flower spike as well, hopefully it will bloom;

The plants have taken over the bog area as well as the pool;

There is still a little of the native moss left, hiding out beneath the larger plants;

And here you can see how they have grown clear down to the waters edge;

After reading about how much everyone here loves the Aquaclears, I decided to pick one up and try it (I'm running the AC20);

I have to say I'm much impressed by the improved water movement. Will still have to see about the media;

Thanks Alex. I tried fiddler crabs in here once, but they burrowed in between the rocks and stirred a bunch of dirt up into the water. I didn't care for the result.

Amazing little project this is. Quite impressed and loved all the pictures of it. Congratulations on it.

Thank you for looking, and for the kind words. Its been a lot of fun, and sparks a lot of interest from the students.

I love this tank! If more teachers did this when I was in school, perhaps a few more people would have realized how exciting science can be. I love that there is so much to look at, and a person with patience and a sharp eye will be rewarded with tiny plants and living critters!

i know,if my teachers would do this,kids would be a lot more interested in science,and the everybody(teachers included) would learn that theres more to science than a textbook.

i looked through the whole thread and all the pics and i was constantly thinking boy a crawfish sure would look good in that tank.

Thank you - that is indeed the cool part. Somebody told me just yesterday that they were able to spot one of the stoneflies. Takes a pretty sharp eye and good deal of attention to spot things in it in its current state.

Indeed they would, personally I hate teaching science using a textbook, so I don't.

Good call! I thought the same at the beginning of the year, but then held off because I was concerned with the water depth it would make the minnows a little too easy for it to catch. I concentrated on baby ones, but by the time I got the tank reset, it was too late. Next year I hope to add a couple.

i dont think theres enough water for a cray.

cray only need enough to soak

Yep I think we'll be ok - at least for a while.

This was such a hit with everyone this year that I was able to convince the other biology teachers that they needed to have one of their own. Next year my aquatic class will be setting up four different 40gal bog tanks. My goal is to have each one be seperate and distinct; I hope to do one all native, but without so many aquatic plants so its more stream-like. One will be carnivorous plants, and one will have salamanders. Not sure one the fourth one yet, so I'm open to suggestions.
