If you're just housing a pair of convicts any of then would work, IMO. I am a fan of the bowfronts.

Well then you pretty much answered your own question go with a 48" tank.

Either find one on craigslist or buy one at petco/petsmart, walmart or LFS they will run about 150-199 new.

Craigslist is a great start. In the past for smaller ( 4 foot tanks and under) I've found re purposing furniture found at yardsales to be beneficial. A buffet or something makes a sturdy stand. As do long dressers etc. Depends on your decor and what your looking for and if you want to do work etc. I've got a 55 with matching real wood stand and canopy getting cleaned up to put for sale now.

For any fish the bigger the footprint the better. Column style tanks suck for fish. The footprint provides area for territories and the equal water surface area provides O2 exchange area.

The 46 bow is actually longer than the 56 column. The 46 bow is 36" long, while the 56 column is 30" long. The 56 column is deeper front to back, and also taller, than the 46 bow.
