Hello,

I have heard about how canister filters and sponge filters become nitrate factories.

What about bio max and bio balls in a sump? Will these become nitrate factories? On that same topic, what would be better? Bio max or bio balls?

Yes they can but also because of low flow and low oxygen areas in the bio balls it can house anerobic bacteria that will consume nitrates. To me it is a trade off. One thing you could do is to put small pieces of LR in your sump instead.

If you dunk your bioballs in your water change water during weekly water changes there shouldn't be any build up.

Very nice. Where did you purchase this glass media?

If you are in the US there is a distributor.
