I finally crossed over and bought a ro/di unit from BRS with attached tds meter and I'm getting a reading of 8ppm on the intake side. I know the tap water at my new place is terrible, but I seriously doubt that's a correct reading.

Are you guys getting low readings like that from tap water?

I've never cared too much about the tds going in. Lower tds coming in will give longer lived resin, but if it is 0 coming out all I care about. If you are getting a reading of 8, which is possible, you win.

Are you using DI ?
My tap is 356 and comes out around 10 without DI..
After going through DI it is zero...
I split my RO so fresh water use RO does NOT go through the DI...
The DI is the quickest of media to be spent in the system so this makes it last much longer for me,and since I mix tap with fresh for my FW it is no big deal to me..
For my reef I add Zero water that has gone through DI..
I have 2 barrels with float valves coming from my RO..
DI and non DI..
I have read articles that say 90-93% removal is average on high TDS input...
