Protien skimmer

My protien skimmer seems to do well for about a day, and then no more foam makes it over the top after that.

It's been running for a week, and hasn't had any new foam (or removed any brown water) since the first day. I started it when I added 30 lbs of LR to my 40 gallon tank.

I expected more foam that what I"m gettting.

Would cleaning it help?

Thanks,
Todd

Look at your water from underneath, is it "mirroe like" or does it look "scummy"?

If it's mirror like then there is nothing for the skimmer to do right now and it'll pick it up as it develops.

If it's scummy looking then you need to look at the skimmer to see if it's working.

BTW what brand is it?

Have you tried adjusting your flow? Maybe you should turn it up a hair until you get a lot of foam, then back it down.

Make sure you don't get a lot of wet foam. You don't want the ick running out onto the floor or back into the tank.

How old is this tank? Its not uncommon for new tanks to not skim much.
