As big as you can. 20-30% of the main tank's volume is a good starting point IMO. What kinda space you got for a sump? Within 30" wide by 12" deep, you can do a 20g high (24" w) or long (30" w), or a 29h. Bigger is better I think.
Well at the store when I bought the tank and stand we slide a 10 gallon In and had plenty of room and tried a 20 gallon and I think it would fit but would probably have to modify the stand or take some of it apart to get it to slide in.
Forget the 10. Keep in mind that these things cannot be filled to the very top so that when the power goes out and the water that is almost pumped up can retreat and not cause an overflow.
