3 dot gourami tank mates

I have spent atleast 2 weeks looking for tank mates for my 3 dot gourami. I have found many websites but all vary in results. I have almost lost all hope. I will not ask my lfs because they told one of my friends has kissing gourami would only get to 3 inches. He is about 8 and killed all of his tankmates. I have thought of every fish possible but either the fish is too aggressive or too passive. It will be in a 40 gl tank so there is plenty of room. HELP

How about a school of praecox rainbows?? Theyre a small rainbow that will add that background schooling look and not steal the show from your 3dg.
