Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has any experience with using abalone shell as a decoration in a freshwater tank. I want to put one in my 240l cichlid tank but worried that it will affect the water parameters. Does anyone have any advice?

I have a 8" abalone shell in one of my tanks that I use as part of a cave system, and it hasn't seemed to affect my water parameters. It's been in the tank several years now. Just make sure to sterilize before putting it in your tank, especially if you picked it up from a beach somewhere.

Also, how do I sterilise an abalone shell?

Soaking them in a bleach solution for a few hours seems like it should clean anything living off of them.

The tank with the abalone shell is a 150g long.
I wouldn't recommend using bleach on anything that goes into your tank. Use boiling water, but carefully, so you don't crack the shell.

Bleach is completely safe for cleaning anything that goes inside as well as the tank itself. You just have to rinse thoroughly.
