My LFS has this in one of his tank, he has no clue what it is, I was wondering what it was. It's pretty neat looking and I thought it would be good for a fry tank. I however don't want to take any home until I'm sure it's not harmful at all. Anyone have any ideas?

Looks like cyano bacteria. A common bacteria found in the salt water aquarium world. Although it is rare, you can see an outbreak of cyano in freshwater and brackish tanks. This bacteria is also called red slime algae, it is what evolutionist consider the basic foundation of all evolution... I believe they call it primordial soup.

Just my opinion, it possible I am wrong, but I am pretty confident this is what it is.
