Strict parameters with sucessful discus keeping. Soft, acidic water of 6.5-7ph with low nitrates under 20ppm, extra filtration but at the same time diffused and calm, lots of air and imo tri weekly minimum water changes.

Treat it like a coral aquarium, minus the saltwater 
Most of the folk I personally know, as well as my non chain local FS
use Cannister filters, UV sterilizers, and Protein skimmers.
Discus are like Roses, their not a plant/hobby, their a part time job lol.
