Yes and no. It's difficult but the only real way to overfilter your tank is with too much water flow. If the fish are getting blasted around your tank from the flow or are all hiding in one corner then there is too much.

It depends on the GPH and the tank size. I would say 10x the tank volume per hour in flow is about the most I would do under normal circumstances.

I ask because currently I have in my 16 gallon tank 12-15 guppy fry. The filter I am using is an AC20. I checked on aq advisor and it said I need more filtration.

The AC20 would be plenty of filtration, especially if you added a second sponge.

I removed the carbon and added a second sponge! Doh! Should have asked before buying!
